Wanting a son’ is outdated… ‘daughters’ now come first (SBS 2025. 8. 11)
In the 1970s, posters with the slogan “Have only two children, regardless of whether they are boys or girls, and raise them well” were put up.
Back then, many couples kept trying until they had a son, taking risks if they only had daughters.
In a survey conducted in the 1990s, over half of Koreans (58%) said they preferred sons, while only about 10% chose daughters.
But after 30 years, the trend has completely reversed.
From October 2024 to February 2025, Gallup International surveyed 44,783 adults across 44 countries and asked which gender they would prefer if they could have only one child. In Korea, 28% chose a daughter.
This figure is more than 10 percentage points higher than the 15% who chose a son.
Korea ranked first in the world, surpassing Japan, Spain, and the Philippines (26%) and Bangladesh (24%) in daughter preference.
The differences by generation are also clear.
Only among those aged 60 and older did son preference (23%) exceed daughter preference by 3 percentage points, while nearly half of women in their 30s and 40s chose daughters.
A survey released by Korea Research in June 2024 showed similar results.
62% agreed that “a daughter is a must,” while only 36% agreed that “a son is a must.”
In fact, in 1990 the birth ratio was 116.5 boys for every 100 girls, but by 2023 it had dropped significantly to 105.1 boys per 100 girls, showing a clear shift.
In June, The Economist (UK) reported that, for the first time in human history, daughter preference is emerging in several regions, with Korea being a representative case.
It analyzed that changes in gender role perceptions, an increase in unmarried men, and social reflection on misogyny are among the many factors at play.
