“한국 것이 좋다면서요?”…’BTS 특수’로 웃은 의외의 곳 / “I heard Korean products are good?”… Unexpected places that benefited from the ‘BTS boom’ / KBS 2026.03.24
BTS fans from all over the world came for the comeback concert after four years.
The area that most noticeably benefited from the “BTS boom” driven by their spending was Myeong-dong in Seoul.
According to an analysis of card spending by region during the week of the concert, sales at optical shops in Myeong-dong increased about 26 times.
Korean medicine clinics increased 16 times, and pharmacies also rose by about six times.
[Catalina / German tourist: “I heard that getting glasses in Korea is much cheaper than in Germany. I also heard that Korean optical shops are very fast.”]
It appears that services with strong price competitiveness and products with distinct Korean characteristics benefited greatly.
Convenience stores around the concert venue were among those best prepared for this surge.
In fact, batteries for light sticks sold rapidly, and sales of items such as triangle kimbap, bottled water, and hot packs to keep warm also increased.
[Amira·Sadika / BTS fans: “We had to wait a long time until the concert, so we needed energy and chose protein bars.”]
The convenience store industry stated that on the day of the concert, sales at stores near Gwanghwamun increased by three to six times compared to the previous week.
However, compared to some sectors in Myeong-dong, there are also responses saying the increase in sales fell short of expectations.
This is attributed to the crowd at Gwanghwamun being smaller than expected and movement being restricted due to on-site safety controls.
Some convenience stores also had difficulty dealing with leftover ready-to-eat food inventory.
[Convenience store employee / voice altered: “People around here are really suffering. We threw everything away. If the crowd numbers hadn’t been exaggerated, it wouldn’t have been this bad.”]
The BTS effect, reflected in sales figures, shows both the power of this concert and the tasks ahead.
